epc Armagh

EPC order page

Armagh has the strange and singular distinction of being the smallest City in Northern and Ireland, having been granted City Status in 1994. It is also, despite that status, the County Town of County Armagh.

 Holy Origins of Armagh

Armagh is believed to have been an ancient site of great spiritual importance to the Pagans, there is even speculation that it was once the Capital of Ulster. Certainly when Christianity spread to Ireland with the Arrival of Saint Patrick in the mid 5th Century Armagh became the island’s “ecclesiastical capital”, St. Patrick founding his Principal church there.

Interesting Buildings

Armagh has two Cathedrals, both named after Saint Patrick. One of them can trace it origins back to 445, the other has the tallest spires in Northern Ireland. Another site of interest is the Armagh Observatory which dates from 1790, and has since its construction been a World Leader in Stellar Astrophysics. Next door to the Observatory is Armagh Planetarium which for the last 40 years has endeavoured to make Astrology fun. The City’s Library is another of it’s historic buildings, the Library was founded in 1771 and is particularly rich in 17th and 18th Century books, including Jonathan Swift’s own first edition of Gulliver’s Travels. Nearby there is St Patrick’s Trian, a complex comprised of three exhibitions: The Armagh Story, tracing the history of Armagh from prehistory to present-day; Patrick’s Testament, a look at the county’s patron Saint; and The Land of Lilliput, a glimpse into Gulliver’s Travels.

Navan Fort and The Argory

Just outside the City itself is Navan Fort and Visitor Centre, one of the most important archaeological sites in Northern Ireland. Parts of the Iron age Fort have been reconstructed and exhibitions showing the daily lives of the Fort’s inhabitants take place daily. The Argory is also nearby. A stunning 19th Century Victorian Mansion furnished as it was in the early part of the twentieth century.  Fascinating and still fully working Bishops and son Cabinet Barrell organ which is played regularly throughout the season, stunning collection of costume and clothing dating from the 1700′s to the 1950′s.

The Planet Earth Festival

Each year Armagh plays host to the Planet Earth Festival, in Armagh City Centre, Market Square, the Mall and at the Navan Centre. A large world floor map to walk on, will be in situated on the Mall.

The high quality exhibition is a collection of large scale photographs (size of a double bed), taken by a celebrated French photographer, Yann Arthus-Bertrand to mark the Millennium and beyond.  It studies the environment and the impact man has made on it in a series of 120 stunning pictures taken around the world from the air and presented on specially built plinths.

Energy Performance Certificates in Armagh

According to new government regulations any property for sale or to let in Armagh must have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). The energy certificate shows the viewers the energy rating of the property as well as the annual fuel costs. The epc comes with a report and a list of recommended improvements that save energy costs and reduce CO2 emissions.
